Mumbai, May 12, 2018: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today approved an approval of a drug to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men.
FDA’s approval will go through the approval process in a few months, the agency said in a press release. “This approval is the first for men with erectile dysfunction to address the problem,” said Dr. Sudhakar Sood, the agency’s Chief Research and Development Officer (CMO). “ED is a common sexual problem in men, particularly in older men, and the FDA has advised patients and healthcare providers that the drug may be effective in treating ED.”
According to a press release, “The approval of Viagra is a significant step in helping men improve their sexual health by addressing erectile dysfunction, offering a treatment option that may be beneficial to many men who have erectile dysfunction.”
“FDA’s approval of this drug underscores the importance of improving the quality of life for patients who are struggling with erectile dysfunction,” said Dr. Sudhakar, Chief Research and Development Officer (CRD). “This approval is a positive sign for physicians and patients in their efforts to identify men who can benefit from this treatment option.”
The approval will provide a new option for men who may not respond to traditional therapies, such as Viagra. “The approval will allow patients to take advantage of the new Viagra therapy, which has proven to be highly effective,” said Sood. “This new drug is also being tested on a subset of men who have erectile dysfunction, and this will provide further support for physicians and patients.”
“While the approval will allow patients to treat ED by improving sexual function and reducing symptoms, it is important to emphasize that patients need to be aware of the potential side effects and to report any unusual symptoms to their healthcare provider,” said Dr. Sudhakar.
“Patients should also be well aware of the risks associated with taking Viagra, such as an erection that lasts longer than four hours, which could be dangerous and potentially permanent,” said Sood.
Viagra is a new treatment for ED, which has been available since 2017 and is available to buy online and through a variety of medical and non-medical online pharmacies. It was the first of a new class of medications known as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors, which are a class of drugs that prevent the breakdown and degradation of the compound PDE5, which is responsible for erections.
The drug is designed to treat erectile dysfunction by increasing blood flow to the penis, allowing men to achieve and sustain an erection. However, the FDA has yet to approve the drug, said Dr. Sood, adding that the approval process will be lengthy, and the approval process is likely to be delayed.
