Viagra is a prescription medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis. This helps men to get or maintain an erection. It belongs to a group of medicines known as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE 5) inhibitors.

Pfizer, the pharmaceutical company that developed Viagra (sildenafil), has (MHRA) to reclassify it’s erectile dysfunction (ED) drug from prescription-only to ‘P’ (Pharmacy). This would allow pharmacies to sell sildenafilwithout requiring a prescriptionor without requiring a prescription if ‘P’ is not possible. The application for this change will be heard before the public meeting on 1-3 June 2024.
The move follows the official regulatory news first on ‘Pharmacy’ first. A consultation with a pharmacist is required before any product is dispensed and is expected to be available for free on the MHRA website. The consultation process begins electronically or by phone and stops at the main pharmacy.
The proposed application should include a link to a MHRA prescription and a physical address and phone number. The MHRA prescription will need to be supplied with a physical address and phone number as well as with information about the applications online.
